“An improvement on burn care”
A full audit cycle on accuracy & appropriateness of burn injury referrals from UHL A&E through the Burns Network

Authors: Stephen R Frost; Paul SC Malone; Leela Sayed; Claire Porter; Reena Agarwal, Dept of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, University Hospitals of Leicester, UK.

Introduction

•Our Emergency Department (ED) refers major burn injuries directly to the Regional Burns Unit/Centre (BU/BC).
•There had been reports of patients referred who could have been managed in-house within our Burns Facility.
•Subsequent investigations highlighted areas lacking: appropriate action was taken to address this.

Objectives

•Assess accuracy of UHL’s initial burn injury assessments compared to the final BU/BC assessment.
•Determine whether any burn referrals were inappropriate when compared to the Midland Burns Network’s Guidelines.
•Implement action in response to findings.
•Re-assess accuracy of assessments & appropriateness of referrals to verify service improvement.
