Multifunctional CAD-CAM scan appliances for 3-appointment digital complete dentures: A dental technique

Part of Topic

Case Presentation

Objective

To describe the technique utilizing 3D-printed multifunctional customized scan appliances in complete denture procedures to reduce the number of clinical appointments and minimize reliance on analog workflows.

Case History/Technical Steps

Appointment 1: Intraoral scan of the complete edentulous arches

In this technique, intraoral scans of edentulous arches were used to design and fabricate custom appliances using CAD-CAM software and 3D-printed resin.

Appointment 2: Utilization of the 3D printed multifunctional customized scan appliance

The scan appliance was used during the appointment. It functioned as a multifunctional record base with several components:

• A custom record base for border molding and definitive impression.
• A Gothic arch tracer for centric relation recording.
• Posterior screws, attached to the base, support the vertical dimension. After achieving the desired dimension, an intraoral scan was taken with the appliance in place.
• A facial scan marker, attached to the maxillary record base, is used for the facial scan to provide an esthetic reference for denture teeth setup.

Definitive impressions were scanned. All STL or PLY files were superimposed, and the dentures weredesigned using CAD-CAM software.

Appointment 3: Denture Placement

The final dentures were fabricated using milled PMMA and placed.

Results

Monolithic milled removable complete dentures were placed, demonstrating adequate esthetics, retention, and stability. Postoperative evaluation showed high patient satisfaction.

Conclusion

This technique streamlines the complete denture process, reducing the number of appointments while maintaining precision and clinical effectiveness.
