The Role of Group Psychotherapy in the Management of Fibromyalgia

Introduction:

•Fibromyalgia affects an estimated 5 million Americans
•Management of this disease is complex and challenging for providers
•Group psychotherapy offers a non-pharmacologic method of managing the symptoms of fibromyalgia
 

Materials & Methods

•11 primary research articles analysed
•Total of 699 participants
•Patients followed for up to 1 year
•Outcome measures:
•Fibromyalgia impact questionnaire (FIQ)
•Beck Depression Inventory (BDI)
•Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pain
 

Results

•FIQ scores improved by 15%
•Reduction in BDI scores by 17%
•VAS scores lowered by 11%
•All statistically significant changes
 

Discussion

•Group psychotherapy is a cost-effective and non-pharmacologic method for managing fibromyalgia symptoms
•Disease outcomes are improved
•Long-term studies needed
•A multidisciplinary approach is best for fibromyalgia
