Application of Diamond-like Carbon Coating inside an Implantable Medical Device for Enhanced Wear Resistance

Implantable Medical  Devices  present a very challenging  tribological  system for the  movable mechanical  components interfaces - similar to  other precision mechanical  system  like  engines and watches.

Systematic root cause analysis was performed on representative field returned devices with confirmed anomaly vs. field returned devices without any anomaly.

The high reliability standards for implantable medical devices requires high confidence in predicted performance and demonstration of device longevity results when design changes are made.  Provided here is a good example of engineering new technological features successfully applied onto small parts inside an implantable medical device, the qualification testing required to assess performance and predict longevity outcomes.
