Minimal Recovery Time Needed to Return to Social Engagement following Nasolabial Fold Correction with Highly Crosslinked Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

Background: The appeal of hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers for facial soft tissue augmentation is partly attributed to the immediate aesthetic effect and relatively short recovery time involved with treatment. Achieving aesthetic outcomes that maintain a natural appearance are a primary concern for many patients. 

Methods: A single-center, non-comparative study designed to evaluate the time (in hours) until subjects returned to social engagement (RTSE) following bilateral correction of moderate and severe nasolabial folds (NLFs) with HA dermal fillers Emervel Classic (EC)and Emervel Deep (ED), respectively. Twenty subjects (aged 35 to 63 years) with moderate and severe NLFs were treated with either EC orED, and maintained a 14-day diary to evaluate posttreatment recovery time. Assessments included Wrinkle Severity Rating Scale (WSRS) and subject satisfaction at days 14 and 30 and Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS) at day 30, posttreatment.

Results: Fifty percent of subjects reported RTSE within 2 hours posttreatment. WSRS and GAIS improved significantly at days 14 and 30. Ninety percent of subjects agreed their face looked natural when smiling and relaxed.

Conclusions: Correction of NLFs with EC and ED can involve fast RTSE, significant improvement in WSRS and GAIS, and can a natural looking aesthetic outcome.
